Hi Folks
There's a long story to go with these snaps. Behind the scenes you'll find humor, stress, sweat, cuts, bruises & tears, (yes… many tears sad to say). The phrase," there will be blood", was a constant. Out of all this I have plucked an abbreviated segment to share with you. I hope you find it interesting & fun.
So it begins on the start line of Bonniville speedway. After conquering many obstacles in both Calgary & Utah, here I am on my skeletal purpose built Harley Davidson. Can't help thinking, "this things never been in gear let alone broke in". When the starting marshal approaches me he sees the rookie decal on my helmet & says in his southern drawl," can you hear me son?"
I respond," yes sir".
"You've never done this before have you son?"
"No sir".
His fingers entered my helmet & he said," I want you to remember three things".
"Yes sir".
"#1- You be safe".
"Yes sir".
"#2- You have fun".
"Yes sir", (as if I need a command).
"#3- You go fast!"
"Yes sir".
He checked my chin strap, shut my helmet screen, stood back, pointed out to the vast white abyss & I let the clutch out for the first time on my home constructed unknown commodity. I realized I had just done Four miles in just a few seconds only when I'd stopped. That's when the silence sets in. There I stood soaked in sweat in the middle of the dried up ocean of salt. The bike ran poker straight with power & gearing in surplus. I was to have no idea what speed I had run, for tech reasons, until my chase vehicle arrived. If I went too fast for my first run I was disqualified for the year. Speedo & tach are useless for tech reasons. So there I wait.
I was clocked at 2-1/4 mile mark at 107 mph on that first run…
& never left 2nd gear.
Be Well Folks
